S.T.E.M.

Mission – S.T.E.M.’s mission is to grow future innovators, creators and makers by exposing, inspiring and engaging communities to opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.).

Goals:

  • Help youth develop interest in STEM and STEM learning activites
  • Develop capacities of youth to engage in STEM based activities for learning and recreation
  • Inspire youth to value the opportunities and possibilities of STEM careers

In the 21st century, one of America’s greatest challenges will be motivating, educating and training a technical workforce to ensure that we can compete and thrive globally. If we are to compete on the global stage in this global economy where Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) are the new intellectual and innovative currencies, we must motivate, inspire and train entire generations of Americans to become S.T.E.M. literate in general, and to pursue S.T.E.M. careers specifically. The NOLA STEMulus Plan! is an attempt at creating a movement which will expose, motivate, inspire, recruit, retain and graduate more New Orleanians at every level in S.T.E.M. related academic subjects and professional careers.

STEMulation! In this activity, programs & events are conducted that bring inspiration, motivation and training to all S.T.E.M. stakeholders (especially students) across the city. Channel Zero Group has organized a group of highly trained and seasoned individuals with broad backgrounds and experience at all levels to train students, parents, and educators in the necessary areas of professional and human development.

“S.T.E.M. Saturdays with Dr. Mackie” is one of the components of STEMulation, which provides city wide family and community academic events monthly where students and parents attend together. The goals of the program are to create exposure and curiosity in regard to life, education and careers in S.T.E.M. as well as to engage the entire community (parents, teachers and volunteers) around S.T.E.M. By holding widely publicized monthly events, the community - including volunteers such as AXA Advisors, is given an opportunity to engage students and children in S.T.E.M. fun and educational activities.

S.T.E.M. Saturdays with Dr. Mackie engages students and children in a new project around a different subject each month. The students and children complete S.T.E.M. kits and present the information at the end of the day to show that they understood the material. S.T.E.M. activities include:

  • Water/Hydrodynamics
  • Energy
    • Solar Energy
    • Fuel Cells
    • Wind Power
